Deconstruction »
Deconstruction began in the 1960s with Jacques Derrida. The basis of deconstruction is to demonstrate that any text has infinite meanings, rather than one, specific interpretation. Derrida argued that people in Western culture tended to think and express thoughts in terms of binary oppositions. Within these oppositions are miniature hierarchies where one term is superior to another. For example, presence and absence: presence is clearly more preferable to absence. Derrida sought not to erase these oppositions, but to erase the boundary between binary oppositions: the concept of limits. Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard and Deleuze and Guattari all give their own example of binary oppositions and the problems of the concept of limits.
