Biodiesel »
Biodiesel new technologies in agriculture have lead to the development of a new fuel called biodiesel. Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel. There are many benefits in using this new fuel. Biodiesel is also safe to use and not harmful for the environment. If biodiesel starts to become more popular and widely used we can plan for a cleaner environment in the future. Biodiesel runs in any conventional, unmodified diesel engine and it can be stored anywhere that diesel fuel is kept. Biodiesel is more lubricating than regular diesel fuel, so it increases the life of diesel engines. Biodiesel has a high flash point, or ignition temperature, which means it's safer to transport. Biodiesel reduces Carbon Dioxide emissions by 100% because it is a renewable fuel, which is very important because carbon dioxide contributes to 50% of the Greenhouse Effect. When burned in a diesel engine, biodiesel replaces the exhaust odor of petroleum diesel with the pleasant smell of doughnuts or french fries. However, the greatest benefit will be how much money you will save with it. Biodiesel is normally made with a ratio of 20% oil with 80% diesel. Oils for biodiesel can be found at any store. However, if the time to filter the oil is abundant, the best oil would be at a restaurant. Restaurants have to pay anywhere from one dollar to two dollars a gallon to have the old oil disposed of, so they will gladly give it away. An extra tank will be needed to drain the dirty oil through a 25 micron filter. Then to start out, the mix should be a ten percent oil to ninety percent diesel, so it won’t clog. As the diesel engine gets accustomed to that mix, gradually increase the amount of oil and decrease the amount of diesel. When the engine starts jerking and backfiring, that means that the mix has too much oil and it’s starting to become to thick for the engine to handle. The faster that you can figure out the right mixture, the better your diesel will run. There are some very good benefits in using biodiesel, but there are also some hazards in using it. One good thing about it is that ethanol is an oxygenate that reduces ground-level ozone. However, depending on the mixture, ethanol may raise levels of nitrogen oxides produced as gasoline emissions. But, since ethanol can be produced locally, it has the potential to add to the local economy and help reduce the importation of oil. Then again, because of its lower energy content relative to gasoline, ethanol also reduces mileage per gallon. Corn-based ethanol production is energy intensive, and in some instances uses nearly as much energy to produce than it supplies, although new technologies are improving the efficiency of production. Ethanol also helps to reduce carbon monoxide levels and other toxic air pollutants.
